So you’ve past the snorkelling phase and want to explore the ocean more. Don’t know where to start? Let us help.

First thing's first, you’ll need to get a divers certificate. This certifies that you know what you’re doing and are a capable and confident diver. To start you need to be over 12 years of age, pass a recreational diving medical and prove you can swim.

Don’t be scared of the water. It can be overwhelming but keep in mind you have instructors with you who are prepared to handle anything that happens.

Keep your breathing steady. Whether is because you’re anxious or nervous or you’re not use to breathing just through your mouth, everyone tends to breath faster. This depletes the air in your tank twice as fast, which means less time in the water.

But the movie Jaws keeps playing in my head? You’ll be lucky to encounter a shark when scuba diving. Most sharks are predatorial; if you don’t disturb them they wont harm you. During your time completing your diving certificate, instructors will show you what to do if you find yourself face to face with Bruce from Finding Nemo. There’s also a device to keep sharks away from surfers or divers: the Shark Shield.

There are many positives to scuba diving such as it can increase your fitness and there are many amazing sites to see underwater all over the world. And there’s plenty of opportunity to travel with a diving group!

Once you have your beginner’s divers certificate, there are plenty more to get including deep-water diving or night dives. To get started call us today or drop in at either location.
